NetTutor Los Angeles Valley College is happy to offer its students free 24/7 English tutoring through NetTutor services. NetTutor also provides online tutoring through a variety of other subjects such as, but not limited to, Astronomy, Biology, Math, and Nursing. There is a 5 hour limit to NetTutor per semester (which may change at LAVC’s discretion), and you must be enrolled in a class that utilizes CANVAS in order to access NetTutor services. If your course is not online, it is up to the professor to have a CANVAS component, and course offerings are at NetTutor’s discretion (not Los Angeles Valley College).

Using NetTutor So, what is it like to work with NetTutor tutors? It is just like dealing with a face-to-face tutor. Here is an example of an interaction we had with their English, Q&A service: “What are the components of a body paragraph?” Thank you for contacting NetTutor, Q&A! A basic body paragraph should follow the PIE method. In general, all paragraphs need to have three pieces: P = Point: also known as your topic sentence where you state what the paragraph is about I = Information: where you present your information (facts, details, quotes, and reasons) E = Explanation: where you explain the relevance of importance of your information Feel free to enter a live session with one of our tutors if you have further questions. Thanks again for using NetTutor! Have a great day!

Using NetTutor In this next example, a sample thesis statement was provided, asking if its contents were satisfactory; the following was their response: Hello! Thank you for your question. This is a good start for your thesis because it appears you are analyzing the text “Immigration Blues” by making claims about the theme of the text. However, unless your assignment specifically directs you to make two separate claims in your thesis (I’ve highlighted them in two different colors below), I would suggest choosing just one of them as the focus of your paper. That will help you to create a clear thesis that can more easily be supported by the rest of your paper. “What improvements can I make to my thesis statement? “Regardless, Immigration Blues exposes readers to other possibilities to the narrative of straight bachelor migrant societies and through the treatment of the characters of Carlito Zafra and Alipio Palma, the reader is given an idea as to how these sorts of queer possibilities are treated.”
