Percentage of Time in Mitosis
2
Problem: What percentage of the time does a cell spend in the various stages of mitosis and interphase? Background:
3
Hypothesis:
4
Procedure: Get a slide of “allium” (onion).
Focus the slide on low, then medium, then high power, just above the root tip so that various stages of mitosis are visible. Count up a column of cells, recording how many are in interphase thru telophase. Repeat, on different areas of the slide until 100 cells have been counted and recorded. Record your data.
6
Data: Stage of cell cycle Interphase Prophase Metaphase Anaphase
Telophase Tally of cells Total number of cells Percent of cells in each stage
7
Class data
8
Data Analysis: 1. Bar graph of class data.
2. Use what you know about the function of cells to explain your results. (1 paragraph). Cancer is the uncontrolled growth of your own cells. How do you think mitosis relates to cancer? No conclusion needed for this lab.
9
Conclusion: What was the purpose of this lab?
What did the data show you and was your hypothesis supported by your data? (Use numbers from the data to show what your data showed). How can you explain your data? (Analyze the data). (Why did what happened happen?) How might error have affected your results? What could you do to improve this lab? What related experiments could you do?
