Replacement Reactions? To determine if a reaction occurs, use the Activity Series Chart. If single element is listed higher in chart, the reaction WILL OCCUR! An activity series chart shows which elements are more or less reactive than other elements.

Replacement Reactions? Example: K + LiCl → Li + KCl Will the Reaction Occur? YES or NO Potassium is BELOW Lithium on the Activity Series Chart. Therefore, the reaction will NOT occur.

Displacement Reactions? To determine if the reaction occurs, use the Solubility Chart. In a Double Displacement Reaction, one product must be soluble & one must be insoluble. The insoluble solid that forms is called the precipitate.

9 Will the Reaction Occur in Double Displacement Reactions?
Example: AgNO3 + KCl → KNO3 + AgCl Using the Solubility Chart: In KNO3, find the ANION (NO3−). Notice (NO3) is under the SOLUBLE heading and it does not have any exceptions. Therefore, KNO3 is the SOLUBLE product. In AgCl, find the ANION (Cl−). Notice (Cl−) is under the SOLUBLE heading, BUT (Cl−) does have an exception when bonded with Ag. Therefore, AgCl is the INSOLUBLE product Will the Reaction Occur? YES or NO
