2 1. Popular Sovereignty The people hold the ultimate authority The government was created by the people of America and they did so in order to govern themselves "We the People"

3 2. Republicanism A form of government in which the desires and viewpoints of the people are represented in government by elected representatives

4 3. Federalism The idea that power is shared between the state and national government State government National government

5 4. Separation of Powers Spilt the national government into three branches Legislative branch makes the laws Executive branch carries out the laws Judicial branch interprets the laws

6 5. Checks and Balances Prevents the abuse of power in government
No branch was given to much power and each branch checks on each other

7 Checks & Balances System by which each of the 3 branches checks on each other to prevent the abuse of power

8 6. Limited Government Government is limited to the power given them in the Constitution. The Constitution tells how leaders who overstep their power can be removed Strict limits on the power of the government in order to protect individual rights

9 7. Individual Rights Bill of Rights provides protection for individual rights Anti-Federalists (opponents of the Constitution demanded that a Bill of Rights be added) Individual rights that should be protected from the power of the government Examples Freedom of religion, press, speech, petition, assembly Right to bear arms No quartering of troops Right not be searched without a warrant
