1 Narrative Non-Fiction Notes

2 Narrative A narrative is a short story or recounting a series of events. Good narration has A clear context (exposition, establishing when, where, and to whom the action is happening) Well-chosen and emphasized details (description) A logical (often chronological) organization An appropriate and consistent point of view A meaningful point or purpose.

3 Chronological Order An organizational method that relates events from beginning to end in the order in which they occurred. First, she prepared the ingredients. Then, she filled the pie. Next, she baked the pie. Finally, she ate the pie.

4 Flashback A narrative device that shows an event or a scene taking place before the present time. Flashbacks break from chronological order to travel back in time to show events from the past.

5 Point of View The method of narrating a story.
1st Person: The narrator is a character and is telling the story. 3rd Person: The story is told by a narrative voice outside of the story. 3rd Person Omniscient: An all-knowing narrator who can see into the minds/thoughts of the characters. 3rd Person Limited: A narrator who tells only what one character thinks, feels, and observes.
