1 How fast objects travel
Velocity and Speed How fast objects travel

2 Speed Speed = v Speed is a scalar – has magnitude Measured in m/s
Slide 1

3 Velocity Velocity = v Velocity is a vector so has magnitude and direction How quickly an object’s position changes as well as the direction of this change Measured in m/s Slide 2

4 Speed vs Velocity Objects traveling at the same speed can have different velocities E.g. 2 escalators traveling at 3 m/s – one going up, the other going down Speed of both = 3 m/s Velocity of escalator going up = 3 m/s up (+3 m/s) Velocity of escalator going down = 3 m/s down (-3 m/s) Slide 3

5 Velocity Formula Formula Formula can also be written as: Slide 4
= average velocity = displacement = time Formula can also be written as: Slide 4

6 Example 1 An object travels east for 25 m for 5 s. What is the average velocity of the object? Plug and Chug Slide 5

7 Example 2 A ball is thrown at 4 m/s to the west. How far does the ball travel in 4 s? Plug and Chug Slide 6

8 Video Speed vs. Velocity Video
