Saltatory Conduction Depolarization only occurs in the gaps between myelin sheath cells. These gaps are called, nodes of Ranvier Na+ Na+ Na+ + + + + + + depolarization + + + depolarization The Myelin layer prevents the movement of Na+ & K+ ions through the axon membrane. The impulse jumps from node to node – a process called saltatory conduction
