Figure 1 Inducing HOXA5 Expression in Colorectal Cancer Stem Cells by Retinoids Suppresses Wnt Signaling and Leads to Colorectal Cancer Stem Cell Differentiation (A) In the homeostatic small intestine and colon (not shown), the stem-cell-bearing crypts reside in a region of high levels of HOXA5 but do not exhibit Wnt activity. HOXA5 and Wnt signaling are mutually antagonistic, as detailed in the insets. TA cell, transit amplifying cell. (B) By applying the same principle observed in intestine during homeostasis, HOXA5 expression in colorectal cancer stem cells (CSCs) can be induced via administering retinoids. This results in differentiation of the CSCs, which then lose their self-renewal and proliferative abilities, thereby curbing tumor growth.
