Organic Chemistry
2
Carbon Carbon is a unique element and as a result it can form a huge variety of molecules; Simple sugar molecules DNA The chemistry of these „carbon based“ molecules is a separate branch of chemistry called ORGANIC CHEMISTRY
3
What is so special about Carbon ?
Carbon atoms can join to each other to form long chains. Atoms of other elements can then join to the chain. The carbon atom in a chain can be linked by single, double or triple bonds. Carbon atoms can also arrange themselves in rings.

What is so special about Carbon?
Only carbon can achieve all these different types of bonding. There are more carbon compounds than all the other compounds put together. Carbon exists in three forms naturally: diamond, graphite and fullerenes (Carbon-60).
5
Carbon Bonding Carbon is a non-metal in group IV.
If forms covalent bonds. Due to its electron configuration carbon can form 4 bonds. It needs 4 more electrons to acheive a full outer shell.
