2 Figure 1 Proposed model of the signal complex regulation of Na+/H+ exchanger-3 (NHE3) by cyclic adenosine monophosphate (cAMP). NHERF links NHE3 to the actin cytoskeleton through the scaffolding protein, ezrin. Ezrin functions as the cAMP-dependent protein kinase A (PKA) anchor protein. It is suggested that the complex is required for activated PKA to phosphorylate NHE3 and that the phosphorylation of specific residues in the C-terminus of NHE3 is responsible, in large measure, for the inhibition of NHE3 activity.
