2 Chapter 1 Questions – Remember to provide evidence!
How old is the author at the beginning of the book? What is the date? What is Papa’s occupation in the opening of the story? Write down a metaphor found on page 15. Write down the quote that is an example of foreshadowing. Write down the simile on page 15. Even though Papa had lived in the U.S. for a long time, what was he prevented from doing? Describe Papa. The quote says, “He led them” (17). What does this tell us about Papa’s character? What was the charge against Papa?

3 Chapter 2/3 Questions – Remember to provide evidence!
Why does Jeanne object to moving to Terminal Island? Explain why the following is ironic: “And it was still with me, this fear of Oriental faces, when we moved to Terminal Island” (19). What does bakatare mean? The quote says, “She reached into the red velvet case, took out a dinner plate and hurled it at the floor right in front of his feet” (21).What do Mama’s actions tell us about her character? What is the problem with the clothes the Japanese brought with them from southern California? Explain what the War Department does to help the people. What made all the kids sick? What bothered Mama the most about the latrines? Explain the character trait we see in Mama that was common to many of the Japanese people in Manzanar.

5 Chapter 5 Questions – Remember to provide evidence!
Explain the difference of mealtime in Manzanar and in the former home of the Wakatsuki’s. How did eating in the mess halls effect the family? What are grunion? What job does Mama get at Manzanar? What is her salary? What is the family’s faith? Describe how Papa has been changed by his stay in North Dakota. What is the date at this point in the story? Why was everyone sad or crying upon his return?

6 Chapter 6 Questions – Remember to provide evidence!
Explain the significance of the cane to Papa. What literary technique is used to tell the story about Papa? When was Papa born? In what country? What skills did Papa learn while in Idaho? Where was Mama born? What high hopes did the family have for Mama? How many children did they have in all? Papa was very proud. Explain how we know that. What was Papa’s job while at Fort Lincoln as a prisoner of war?
