4 Schedule of readings Before next exam (February 8)
Please read chapters in OpenStax textbook Please read Appendix D, E & F online On syllabus this is referred to as online readings 1, 2 & 3 Please read Chapters 1, 5, 6 and 13 in Plous Chapter 1: Selective Perception Chapter 5: Plasticity Chapter 6: Effects of Question Wording and Framing Chapter 13: Anchoring and Adjustment

5 Project 1 Likert Scale (summated scale) Correlation (scatterplots) Comparing two means (bar graph)

6 Likert Scale is always a “summated scale” with multiple items.
All items are measuring the same construct. The score reflects the sum of responses on a series of items. - miniquiz (like Cosmo - ask several questions then sum responses)

7 Writing Assignment #1

8 Writing Assignment #1 - complete this Likert scale and then name it
Item 1: “I travel as often as I can” Likert Scale 1 Item 1: Travel often = 5 Strongly Disagree Disagree Neutral Agree Strongly Agree Item 2: Out of town = 5 Item 3: New Places = 5 Item 2: “I enjoy my time spent out of my hometown” Total Score = 15 Strongly Disagree Disagree Neutral Agree Strongly Agree Name: “Passion for travel” What is this Likert Scale measuring? Item 3: “I love to visit new places” Strongly Disagree Disagree Neutral Agree Strongly Agree

9 Writing Assignment #1 - complete this Likert scale and then name it
Item 1: “It is important to me that I do well in school” Strongly Disagree Disagree Neutral Agree Strongly Agree What is this Likert Scale measuring? Item 2: “I spend more time studying than I do going out” Strongly Disagree Disagree Neutral Agree Strongly Agree Item 3: “I really value the importance of a good education” Strongly Disagree Disagree Neutral Agree Strongly Agree

10 Writing Assignment #1 - complete this Likert scale and then name it
Item 1: “I like dressing up for Halloween” Strongly Disagree Disagree Neutral Agree Strongly Agree What is this Likert Scale measuring? Item 2: “I will definitely go out for Halloween” Strongly Disagree Disagree Neutral Agree Strongly Agree Item 3: “I plan my costume weeks in advance of Halloween” Strongly Disagree Disagree Neutral Agree Strongly Agree

11 Writing Assignment #1 - complete this Likert scale and then name it
Item 1: “Telling the truth is always better than lying” Strongly Disagree Disagree Neutral Agree Strongly Agree What is this Likert Scale measuring? Item 2: “I will tell the truth even when it hurts” Strongly Disagree Disagree Neutral Agree Strongly Agree Item 3: “Keeping secrets is not right” Strongly Disagree Disagree Neutral Agree Strongly Agree

12 Writing Assignment #1 - create your own Likert Scale and name it
Likert Scale #5 – Create your own scale (3 items) Item 1: “________________________” Strongly Disagree Disagree Neutral Agree Strongly Agree What is this Likert Scale measuring? Item 2: “_________________________” Strongly Disagree Disagree Neutral Agree Strongly Agree Item 3: “____________________________” Strongly Disagree Disagree Neutral Agree Strongly Agree

13 Project 1 Likert Scale (summated scale) Correlation (scatterplots) Comparing two means (bar graph)

14 Scatterplot displays relationships between two continuous variables
Correlation: Measure of how two variables co-occur and also can be used for prediction Range between -1 and +1 The closer to zero the weaker the relationship and the worse the prediction Positive or negative

15 Relationship between Score on “Value Education” Scale and GPA
Positive correlation: as values on one variable go up, so do values for the other variable Negative correlation: as values on one variable go up, the values for the other variable go down Relationship between Score on “Value Education” Scale and GPA Value Education Positive Correlation GPA

16 Relationship between Score on
Positive correlation: as values on one variable go up, so do values for the other variable Negative correlation: as values on one variable go up, the values for the other variable go down Relationship between Score on “Value Education” Scale and Hours Partying Value Education Negative Correlation Hours Partying

17 Perfect correlation = +1.00 or -1.00
One variable perfectly predicts the other Height in inches and height in feet Speed (mph) and time to finish race Positive correlation Negative correlation

18 Correlation Range between -1 and +1 +1.00 perfect relationship = perfect predictor +0.80 strong relationship = good predictor +0.20 weak relationship = poor predictor 0 no relationship = very poor predictor -0.20 weak relationship = poor predictor -0.80 strong relationship = good predictor -1.00 perfect relationship = perfect predictor

19 Project 1 Likert Scale (summated scale) Correlation (scatterplots) Comparing two means (bar graph)
