5 Hamlet: Act 4, Scenes 1-3 Inferred Main Idea: What is Claudius’s reaction when he hears about Polonius? What does this tell us about his personality? Explain. Hidden Meaning: Hamlet’s last line in scene 2 is a strange one. Some people believe he says it seriously and goes with the men to see the king. Others think he says it playfully and runs away, making the men chase him. Which do you think Shakespeare had in mind? Explain. Inferred Main Idea: In trying to protect Hamlet, Gertrude tells Claudius that Hamlet “weeps for what is done.” There is a double- meaning in this line. What does Claudius think she means, and what does she really mean? Main Idea: What is Claudius planning for Hamlet? Do you think you would do something similar if you were him? Do you think his plan will work, or not? Why? Hidden Meaning: Choose one of Hamlet’s “crazy” lines in our reading for today. First, write down the line. Next, explain the double meaning found in the line (the “method” in Hamlet’s madness).
