Lesson Topic(s): Science 2nd Grade Week of: 1-14 to 1-18, 2019 Objectives: Students will learn about the Arctic region and the animals that live in that region. TEKS: 2.9A basic needs of animals; 2.9B environmental factors; 2.9C living organisms/food chains/camo ELPS: 2E; 2F; 3E;4G;5G Essential Question(s): How does living in the Arctic effect the animals and people that live there? Monday Tuesday Wednesday Thursday Friday Lesson Plan Aurora Borealis Look at examples of aurora borealis and use chalk to create a drawing of it. Indigenous people Watch Polar Bear Prowl Magic School Bus in the Arctic Go over project guidelines. Vocabulary Arctic Circle North Pole Magnetic North Compass rose Continents Inuit Adapt to cold Food Clothing igloo Camouflage land mammal Habitat Diet Coat/fur Characteristics Food chain blubber Requirements Due date Texture 3-D neatness Higher order questions Analyze the globe and where the Aurora Borealis occurs (also Aurora Australis.) Explain why we don’t see them where we live. Compare how the Inuit people are like you and how they are different from you. Discuss a misconception you had about polar bears before you studied them. Analyze the movie. Categorize the things in the movie that would be fictional versus things that are non-fiction. Create a project that depicts some aspect of the Arctic using information you have learned from our study of the Arctic. Assessment Strategy Students will draw a sky showing the aurora borealis. Students color an Inuit person and create an environment they might live in showing their clothing, houses , and food sources. Students write a response to the video discussing their prior misconceptions. Students make a t chart to compare things from the movie that are fiction and things that are nonfiction. Students will create a project depicting the Arctic using the guidelines in the project assignment sheet.
