Figure 1 Wnt/β-catenin signaling: a key controller in dermal differentiation and pathophysiology. Mastrogiannaki et al. (2016) provide evidence of overexpressed β-catenin controlling adipogenic differentiation in the reticular dermis. Using previous defined markers (Driskell et al., 2013), the authors selectively target reticular fibroblasts (Pdgfrα+/Dlk1+) to stabilize β-catenin. Overexpression of dermal Wnt/β-catenin negatively regulates adipocyte terminal differentiation, leading to an increase in preadipocytes and a diminished dermal adipose layer. Accompanying the loss of adipocytes was a fibrotic dermal phenotype and a prolongation of the anagen phase of the hair cycle.
