1 Learning Objectives 1.To consider the effects water can have on our health if it is not clean and safe for use. 2.To identify ways of improving water quality and sanitation in countries that need it.

2 It is a fact that a child dies every 15 seconds from water related diseases.
What types of diseases are there? Diarrhoea spread by dirty water Malaria spread by mosquitoes breeding in stagnant water Hookworm parasite causing severe internal bleeding Guinea Worm a worm which lives under peoples’ skin Bilharzia – River Blindness parasite transmitted by water snails. Where in the world might this be happening?

3 OVER 1 BILLION PEOPLE DO NOT HAVE ACCESS TO SAFE WATER.
Why is this happening? Industries pollute water Sewage is washed into the rivers because only 50% of the world’s population has adequate sanitation (toilets). The quality of water is becoming worse. Millions of people in poorer countries have to use water contaminated by human sewage. In parts of Africa nitrate levels in drinking water are 8 times higher than ‘safe’ levels.

4 Less Economically Developed Countries (LEDCs)
What are the water issues here? Why?

5 How do MEDCs pollute their water?
What about More Economically Developed Countries (MEDCs) – are they all clean? How do MEDCs pollute their water?

6 WATER FEVER You are a water official who wants to improve water quality and sanitation in countries where it is inadequate. You have got 2 minutes to think up a catchy slogan that will get the government’s backing. Share your slogans with the class and make a note of your slogan at the bottom of the “Water and Health”
