Reading Academically What do you read?
Some books are to be tasted, others to be swallowed, and some few to be chewed and digested. Francis Bacon, 1625. What do you understand by this quote? Well, the purpose of reading differs from one individual to the other.

Why do we read? To get an overview (background reading)
To locate specific information To develop detailed and analytical understanding Pleasure reading/free-range reading.

How do we read? Fast reading
Scanning (very quick absorption of the content) Skimming (running eyes down very quickly over the main features)

Slow Reading Why? Analyze and understand information
Evaluate and be critical Remember the information you read Follow instructions
