Types of Reactions Thursday, 4/17/14
2
Reaction Types There are four basic reaction formats Synthesis
Decomposition Single-replacement (displacement) Double-replacement (displacement)
3
Synthesis A + B → AB Example: Fe + O2 → FeO2
Two or more substances combine to form another substance A + B → AB Example: Fe + O2 → FeO2
4
Decomposition AB → A + B Example: CuCl2 → Cu + Cl2
One substance breaks down, or decomposes, into two or more simpler substances. AB → A + B Example: CuCl2 → Cu + Cl2
5
Single Displacement One element replaces another in a different compound. A + BC → AC + B Example: Zn + H2S → H2 + ZnS
6
Double Displacement AB + CD → AC + BD AgNO3 + NaCl → AgCl + NaNO3
The positive ion of one compound swaps with another positive ion of a second compound. AB + CD → AC + BD AgNO3 + NaCl → AgCl + NaNO3

Your Job Complete the “Jitterbug” assignment.
