Newton’s Laws of Motion
2
This is also called the Law of Inertia
Newton’s First Law An object at rest will stay at rest and an object in motion will stay in motion until acted upon by an outside force. This is also called the Law of Inertia
3
Newton’s Second Law Acceleration = Net Force Mass
Acceleration depends on the object’s mass and the net force acting on it. Acceleration = Net Force Mass Unit for force is Newton (N) or kgm/s2 (mass unit is kg and acceleration unit is m/s2.
4
* For every action, there is an equal but opposite reaction *
Newton’s Third Law If one object exerts a force on another object, the second object exerts a force of equal strength in the opposite direction of the first object. * For every action, there is an equal but opposite reaction *
5
It refers to the quantity of motion an object has.
Momentum This is a characteristic of a moving object that is related to the mass and velocity of the object. It refers to the quantity of motion an object has. Momentum = mass x velocity Unit for momentum = kgm/s *The more momentum an object has, the more difficult it is to stop *
