6th Century BCE in India & Greece – first concepts of atoms. 1661 Robert Boyle – matter was made up of atoms. 1789 Antoine Lavoisier – conversion of matter. 1805 John Dalton – each element consists of unique atoms. Originator of modern atomic theory. 1869 Lavoisier and Mendeleev – periodic table. 1897 J. J. Thomson – discovered the electron and proposed the plum pudding model. 1909 – Geiger, Marsden and Rutherford – discovered the nucleus.

4 Properties of the atom John Dalton in 1808 explained how atoms behave. We still mainly use this concept today.
