1 What is a Mineral? Day 1 Do Now: (Teacher Page)
What is a characteristic? Objective: Students will be able to analyze the characteristics of minerals and mineral formation in order to create a sequence chain explaining mineral formation. Homework: - Create an Acrostic Poem about minerals. (Student Page)

2 What is a Mineral? Day 1 Observe the samples at your table. Discuss with your table partners what makes each sample different and similar. A mineral is a naturally occurring, inorganic solid with a orderly crystalline structure and a definite chemical composition. (Teacher Page) Objective: Students will be able to analyze the characteristics of minerals and mineral formation in order to create a sequence chain explaining mineral formation.

3 What is a Mineral? Day 1 Create a foldable following the teacher’s directions. Read page in the textbook. Complete the sections of the foldable using the information from the reading. Glue the foldable on your student page. Objective: Students will be able to analyze the characteristics of minerals and mineral formation in order to create a sequence chain explaining mineral formation.

4 What is a Mineral? Day 1 (Teacher Page)
There are four major processes that lead to the formation of minerals. Crystallization from Magma Precipitation Pressure and Temperature Hydrothermal Solutions Objective: Students will be able to analyze the characteristics of minerals and mineral formation in order to create a sequence chain explaining mineral formation.

5 What is a Mineral? Day 1 In your assigned groups create a poster to teach the class about your assigned mineral formation process. The poster should include: (Textbook Pages 57-59) Title Description Picture/Illustration Objective: Students will be able to analyze the characteristics of minerals and mineral formation in order to create a sequence chain explaining mineral formation.

6 What is a Mineral? Day 1 Assessment: - Create a sequence chain showing how a mineral forms from the process you studied. Objective: Students will be able to analyze the characteristics of minerals and mineral formation in order to create a sequence chain explaining mineral formation.

7 What is a Mineral? Day 1 Summary:
I can list and explain the 5 characteristics of minerals. I can define a mineral. I can describe one mineral formation process. Objective: Students will be able to analyze the characteristics of minerals and mineral formation in order to create a sequence chain explaining mineral formation.
