Leslie Davis, Krista Boddy, Anabela Vanesa Valerioti, Brian Doebbeling, Moriah Kent, Amanda Pawelski Tuesday, Feb. 27th 4:00-5:00 PM EDDY 11 AAAL's: Laura will discuss my experience as a graduate student leader within the American Association for Applied Linguistics (AAAL). I will share how I came to be involved, ways that I’ve been able to advocate for graduate students in this role, and why I believe that all grads should seek out opportunities to get involved in academic service. Laura Hamman Wednesday, Feb. 28th 12:00-1:00 PM EDDY 107 What can community engagement look like for language: Frederique will demonstrate that through service-learning – “a pedagogy and an activity in which students perform a community service as part of their academic coursework” (Gascoigne, 2001) – learners of an L2 can be impacted in several ways: language acquisition, stronger self-esteem, self-appropriation, résumé building and career directions. This presentation will share some examples of local community service projects that have facilitated L2 use and affected students in different capacities. Frederique Grim Thursday, March. 1 Challenges Arabic students face in learning ESL: Layla will review the challenges Arabic speaking students face when they learn in the US. This will include some linguistic and cultural ones. She will be discussing and sharing ideas that will be of help to teachers and, eventually, students. Layla Malander March. 2 Friday, LSC 382 Talking past each other (and what this means for advocacy and beyond): Dr. Bill VanPan will review three basic concepts related to language teaching: language, communicative, and acquisition. I will show how teachers often talk past each other and how researchers sometimes misinterpret each other because of these constructs. The reason for this, as in all the ways in which we talk past each other, is that we assume the other person understands a particular construct in the same way we do. I will offer some working definitions of these terms for the audience to use in its own discussions with colleagues, administrators and others Dr. Bill VanPan
