3. Serbia One of the countries in Balkans
Large Slavic population (ethnic group)
Serbia wanted to expand to include all Slavic ppl in the Balkans
Russia supported the effort – became ally of Serbia
Many Slavs in Austria-Hungary; A-H feared a loss of their power if Serbia successful

4. A.H. versus Serbia
To stop from losing their power, Austria-Hungary took over Bosnia & Herzogovia (area to the west of Serbia that had a large Slavic pop.)
Serbians mad & vowed to get their land back

6. Murder Archduke Franz Ferdinand became prince of Austria-Hungary
June 1914 took a trip to Sarajevo in Bosnia
While there, he was shot by a member of the Black Hand (a secret society in Bosnia aimed at getting rid of A.H.)

7. World War I Begins In response, Austria declared war on Serbia
Same day, Russia started moving toward Serbia to protect them
Germany began mobilizing to protect A.H.
France & G.B. began preparing for war
World War I began
