Greeks- Everyone participates in society (Direct Democracy) Romans- Elect people to represent you and promote the common good (Representative Republic)

1. Magna Carta, A.D.- limited the monarch’s power for the first time 2. Parliament- monarch needs decisions approved by his “Great Council” 3. English Bill of Rights- certain rights could not be abused by the monarch

4 Ideas Brought to the New World
English colonists brought with them 3 main concepts The need for an ordered social system, or gov’t The idea of limited gov’t, that is, that gov’t should not be all-powerful The concept of representative gov’t- a gov’t that serves the good of the people
