Communication is a multifaceted phenomenon involving the transmission or exchange of thoughts, ideas, feelings or information through verbal and non-verbal channels (Anderson 1959).  Communication Verbal Oral Written Non Verbal

3 What is nonverbal communication?
Nonverbal communication is the act of conveying a thought, feeling, or idea through physical gestures, posture, and facial expressions. Nonverbal communication plays a significant role in our lives, as it can improve a person’s ability to relate, engage, and establish meaningful interactions in everyday life.

4 Why is Nonverbal communication important?
Reinforce or modify what is said in words. For example, people may nod their heads vigorously when saying "Yes" to emphasize that they agree with the other person, but a shrug of the shoulders and a sad expression when saying "I'm fine thanks,” may imply that things are not really fine at all! Convey information about their emotional state. Define or reinforce the relationship between people.

5 Why is Nonverbal communication important?
Provide feedback to the other person. Non-verbal Messages allow people to regulate the flow of communication, for example by signaling to others that they have finished speaking or wish to say something. A better understanding of this type of communication may lead people to develop stronger relationships with others.

6 Non-Verbal Communication
Types of Non-Verbal Communication Proxemics Chronemics Paralanguage Kinesics

7 PROXEMICS (distance) Different cultures have different comfort levels of distance In today’s world, children grow older and become less dependent on parents they require more space. Similarly, youngsters are looking for ‘space’ from their partners. Edward T. Hall’s 4 levels of distance – Intimate: 0 to 18 inches personal: 18 inches to 4 feet social: 4 to 10 feet public: 10 feet to infinity

10 CHRONEMICS (time) Time is an important non-verbal cue that factors heavily into communication, particularly in the world of business. The way in which one perceives and values time, structures time, and reacts to time, frames communication.

11 KINESICS Body language- Facial expressions-
Perceptions of people are affected by the way they sit, walk, stand up, or hold their head. The way you move and carry yourself communicates a wealth of information to the world. Facial expressions- The human face is extremely expressive, able to express countless emotions without saying a word. And unlike some forms of nonverbal communication, facial expressions are universal. The facial expressions for happiness, sadness, anger, surprise, fear, and disgust are the same across cultures.

12 CLASSIC EXAMPLE OF FACIAL EXPRESSIONS

13 KINESICS Eye contact The way we look at someone can communicate many things, including interest, affection, hostility, or attraction. Gestures We wave, point, beckon, and use our hands when we’re arguing or speaking animatedly, expressing ourselves with gestures often without thinking. Physical appearance

14 VOLCALICS (Paralanguage)
Use of voice to communicate includes elements such as pitch, rate, pauses, volume, tone of voice, silences, laughs, screams, sighs, etc. Studies have found that people who talk louder, faster, and more fluently are more persuasive Deep voices are often viewed as more credible Powerless style of communication (pauses, umhs, uhs, tag questions) lowers perceptions of credibility

15 Conclusion Knowledge of the several factors involved with nonverbal communication, and an awareness of its power will improve our ability to communicate with others.
