3 What is a drought? A drought is an extended period of months or years when a region does not get the amount of water it normally gets or needs. Droughts are some of the most destructive catastrophes in poor countries because it kills crops.

5 What causes a drought? Droughts are caused by a lack of rainfall for a long period of time (usually measured in years). Unlike a dry spell, prolonged lack of rain will cause regions around the world to slowly dry out. Droughts are often unpredictable and can happen in normally wet areas.

6 Effects of a drought Loss or destruction of fish and wildlife habitat
Lack of food and drinking water for wild animals and people Increase in disease in wild animals, because of reduced food and water supplies Migration of wild animals, leading to a loss of wildlife in some (drought-stricken) areas and too many wildlife in areas not affected by drought Increased stress on endangered species
