The Land Changes Hands By 1853 the Dakota were living on the new reservations. The depended on the annuities promised by the treaties to support themselves. After the signing of the treaties tens of thousands of newcomers began rushing to Minnesota. To men like Alexander Ramsey, this change reflected how things were meant to be. He said the treaties removed “obstacles” that were keeping Minnesota from advancing. In 1858 Minnesota became the 32nd state.
