1
What do all of these things have in common?
2
What is matter? Matter is anything that has mass and volume.
Mass: the amount of matter in an object Measure with a balance in grams. Volume: the amount of space matter takes up Measure with a ruler (cm3) or graduated cylinder (mL).
3
Examples of Matter You Me What about the air we breathe?
4
Classifying Matter: Chemical Properties
Definition: Properties that are only observable when one substance interacts with another Examples: Reactivity with other chemicals, flammability, toxicity
5
Classifying Matter: Physical Properties
Definition: Properties than can be observed or measured without changing the composition of matter. Examples: Color, texture, shape, mass, state of matter
6
Two Types of Physical Properties
Intensive Definition: Properties that are independent of the amount of matter present Examples: color and boiling point Extensive Definition: Properties that depend on the amount of matter present Examples: mass, length, volume
7
Can you describe what’s happening?
Why do you sound funny when you inhale helium?
8
Density Density is a ratio that compares the mass of an object to its volume.
9
Example! A block has a mass of 325 g and a volume of 500 cm3, what is the density?
10
Quick “Q’s” What are the units commonly acceptable for density?
Is density a physical or chemical property? Why?! Do you think density is an intensive or extensive property?
