Process for External Examiners
Detailed below is the sequence of events contained in the External Examiner process (including flow chart with timelines). After your nomination has been accepted by Academic Council you will receive your contract which you should return as soon as possible to Examination. The Faculty Secretary will then set you up with a login on GURU, our online Examinations System. You can find videos on how to log in and use GURU on our webpage. In early October and early March you will receive: - Exam papers Marking Schemes Model or indicative solutions Continuous Assessment guidelines You will review all this information to ensure that it adequately reflects the module learning outcomes, syllabus and approved course schedule. Then you agree or mark any recommendation for change and return comments to the Internal Examiner. After the Examinations has taken place you will be required to review samples of continuous assessment work and exam scripts. These may be sent to you directly or you may review them when visiting IT Sligo for the Progression and Awards Board. The following information should be presented to you: - Exam papers Marking Schemes Model or indicative solutions Sample scripts or CAs You will need to: a) Agree the criteria for selection of sample assessments, b) Review samples, c) Agree final marks to be awarded to each student in each module (you may recommend moderation or remarking if deemed appropriate), d) review class group performance for each module, e) review boarder line cases for each module, f) sign the grade sheet.

Process for External Examiners continued.
Visit IT Sligo to attend and contribute to the Progression and Awards Board. If requested you may need to carry out a review for remarking after the Progression and Award Boards. Please note that this could be during the summer months. Prepare and submit the External Examiner Final report online on GURU by September 30th. When preparing the report these are some aspects which you should take in to consideration: - your participation in the assessment process the appropriateness of programme outcomes, marking and structure national and international comparisons recommendations and commendations The report will be considered by Head of School, Head of Department, Programme Board and the Academic Council. Feedback will be given to External Examiner by 30 December.
