What is Polarity of a molecule?
Daily Starter Day 41 What is Polarity of a molecule?
2
Describing Chemical Reactions
A chemical reaction is a process in which one or more substances are changed into one or more different substances. The original substances are called the REACTANTS (left of arrow) The resulting substances are called the PRODUCTS (right of the arrow)
3
THE law of conservation of mass
The Law of Conservation of Mass states that “Mass can not be created, nor destroyed.” This means that everything that goes in to a reaction MUST COME OUT of the reaction. All elements must be accounted for. The means, the total mass of the reactants MUST BE EQUAL TO the total mass of the products
4
How do you know? There are indications that a chemical reaction has taken place: Heat or light released Production of gas Formation of a precipitate Color change
5
Chemical Equations All reactions can be written as a chemical equation. All chemical equations must: Represent ALL KNOWN FACTS Contain the correct formulas for the reactants and products Abide by the Law of Conservation of Mass
6
The first step is to write a word equation from the chemical equation presented:
N2(g) + 3H2(g) 2NH3(aq) 1 mole of Nitrogen gas is combined with 3 moles of hydrogen gas to produce 2 moles of ammonia solution.
