4 When variable are on both sides
Use the distributive property if necessary Combine like terms If like terms are on the same side of the equal sign, you may just add them together. If like terms are on different sides of the equal sign, you must do the opposite operation to combine them. (whatever you do to one side of the equal sign you have to do to the other)

5 examples a) 3n + 2 = -2n – 8 b) –(5a + 6) = 2(3a + 8) c) 3w – 6 + 2w = -2 + w
