Aim: How do we define solutions?
Do now: What is the difference between dipole-dipole force and dispersion force? Home - Work Read pgs Answer questions on page 97 # 1-4. Copy the question and answer.
2
Definitions A solution is a homogeneous mixture
A solute is dissolved in a solvent. solute is the substance being dissolved solvent is the liquid in which the solute is dissolved an aqueous solution has water as solvent
3
Types of solutions Solid dissolved in a solid
When metals dissolve in each other to form a solution we call this - alloy. (ex. penny) Liquid dissolved in a liquid Gas dissolved in a gas
4
Properties of liquid solutions
1. Solutions are homogenous mixtures. 2. Solutions are clear and do not dispense light. 3. Solutions can have color. 4. Solutions will not settle upon standing. 5. Solutions will pass through a filter.
5
Saturation A saturated solution is one where the concentration is at a maximum - no more solute is able to dissolve. A saturated solution represents an equilibrium: the rate of dissolving is equal to the rate of crystallization. The salt continues to dissolve, but crystallizes at the same rate so that there “appears” to be nothing happening.
6
Super-saturation A super saturated solution is one where the concentration of solute exceeds the maximum.
7
Unsaturated A unsaturated solution is one where the concentration of solute is not at a maximum - more solute can dissolve.
