1 Do Now 9/14/14 Take out HW Text p. 9 & 10, #8-32 evens, #43-45 all
Copy HW in your planner. Text p.14, #19-32 all, evens, 58 & 59 Be ready to copy POTW #1.

2 Homework Text p. 9 & 10, #8-32 evens, #43-45 all

3 Objective SWBAT identify properties of rational numbers and use them to simplify numerical expressions. In your journal section, explain in your own words the meaning of the word PROPERTY. Think of the word in a mathematical or science context. Then use the word PROPERTY in a math and science related sentence.

4 Section 1.2 “Properties of Numbers”
1). Commutative Property 2). Associative Property 3). Identity Property 4). Distributive Property

5 Think of it as COMMUTING to work!
Commutative Property The order of numbers when you add or multiply numbers does not change the solution. = a + b = b + a 2 · 3 = 3 · ab = ba Think of it as COMMUTING to work!

6 Think of it as changing your GROUP of friends!
Associative Property REGROUPING of numbers when adding or multiplying does not change the solution Think of it as changing your GROUP of friends! (2 + 3) + 4 = 2 + (3 + 4) (a + 10) + 7= a + (10 + 7) (5 · 6) · 10 = 5 · (6 · 10) 5(8c) = (5·8)c

7 Using the Commutative and Associative Properties
Mental Math…without writing down the problems solve these in your head using the commutative and associative properties. 4(7)(25) ( ) + 25 (4)(25)(7) = 85 100(7) = 700

8 Identity Property 5 + 0 = 5 3 x 1 = 3 “No change” property
Think of it as "I" LOOK IN THE MIRROR and see myself! For addition, the sum of any number plus 0 is that number. a + 0 = 0 + a = a For multiplication, the product of any number times 1 is that number. b · 1 = 1b = b

9 Distributive Property
You can use the distributive property to multiply numbers mentally by breaking apart one of the numbers and writing it as a sum or difference. 7(14) = 7(10 + 4) = 7(10) + 7(4) = = 98

10 Distributive Property
8(16) = 8(10 + 6) 24(6) = (20 + 4)6 = 8(10) + 8(6) = (20)6 + (4)6 = = = 128 = 144

11 Practice More Practice with Properties of Numbers
