Verbal Irony When what a character says is not what he/she really means. Sarcasm falls under “verbal irony.” Sometimes involves playing with double meanings. Example: “Math class was thrilling today.”

Situational Irony When the last thing one might expect to happen actually does happen Involves a “reversal” Examples: Dentist/Dermatologist Gas station robbers

Dramatic Irony When the audience is aware of something that the characters are not. Creates suspense/tension Examples: Soap operas Romeo and Juliet suicide
