20.1: Responses to Predation

Organism Population Community (interaction of different species) Ecosystem Biosphere

PREDATION (+/-) one species eats another species predator: eater and prey: eaten Types: carnivores, herbivores and omnivores

cyclic in nature ↑ in prey leads to ↑ in predators (vice versa) Lag time

RESPONSES TO PREDATION
1. Camouflage: Cryptic coloration disguises an animal so it’s less visible to predators or prey asset/tdc02_vid_disguise/

2. Warning Coloration (aposematism): intended not to camouflage an organism but to make it more noticeable - Bright coloring to warn potential aggressors of toxicity

3. Mimicry: physical (or behavioral resemblance) of one species to another

4. Action by Prey: Action by prey just before death that is unexpected by predator

5. Alluring Coloration: animals are colored so a predator's attention is drawn to a non-vital part of the prey's body

6. Deceptive Markings: Markings that resemble fake eyes or false heads to startle predator.
