2. Mercantilism
Economic theory that says a nation becomes powerful by exporting more than it imports

The American colonies provided Great Britain with the raw materials (e.g. trees) so the British could use the raw materials to make finished products (e.g. furniture).

To make sure the American colonies traded only with Great Britain, Parliament passed the Navigation Acts

Cause: In 1763, Great Britain ends a long and costly war with France
(Wars are Expensive!)

Effect: Parliament passes new taxes on the American colonists
