1 IS SHIFTING TO MORE EFFICIENT RESOURCES REDUCING CONSUMPTION
Miss Yolande Peter Byletts Secondary School Grade 11 Mathematics, Computer studies, Business Studies, Science & technology. Collaboration, community and Content

2 Overview “ Is shifting to more efficient resources reducing consumption” is a project that will look to search in details whether efficiency advancement in our resources result in reduced consumption or the other way round. For many decades there has been a trend in the manufacturing industries of improving efficiency in their products. This trend is very popular amongst electrical appliances, fuels, electricity and buildings etc. The goal behind this transformation was to produce reasonable or the same amount of work but using less energy compared to those previously inefficient resources. “One way to understand the Jevons paradox is to observe that an increase in the efficiency with which a resource(e.g. fuel) is used causes a decrease in the price of that resource when measured in terms of what it can achieve(e.g. work). Generally speaking, a decrease in the price of a good or service will increase the quantity demanded(see supply and demand, demand curve). Thus with a lower price of work, more work will be “purchased” (indirectly, by buying more fuel). The resulting increase in the demand for fuel is known as the rebound effect. This increase in demand may or may not be large enough to offset the original drop in demand from increased efficiency.

3 Cont… The Jevons paradox occurs when the rebound effect is greater than 100%, exceeding the original gains. This effect has been called ‘backfire’ ‘’ However results have different readings compared to the initial goal, these results have formulated the burning question of “could an improvement in the efficiency of our resources result in less consumption”?

4 Class based teaching provided the learners with the
knowledge and skills required to perform the ICT tasks effectively. Cross curricular teaching provided the opportunity for continued and progressive learning Using what was learned in the classroom gave the opportunity for learners to gain first hand experience in how computers are used to simplify everyday activities. The use of computers (excel0 to simplify complex equations and make difficult repetitive tasks interesting helped demonstrate the value of ICT to the learners. The learners become enthusiastic in the use of technology

5 Learning outcomes and Objectives
Scientific Investigation: Science, society and the Environment Personal Development: Listening, constructing scientific knowledge, exploring issues and geographical enquiry The project will audit whether efficiency advancement in resources result in either reduced consumption or the consumption levels remain the same even after the advancement .

6 Project Procedure (Implementation)
The implementation will be conducted in a form of a survey categorising people in groups according to their level of shifting to more efficient resources such as: Take 3 people who have not made any changes to efficiency to audit their electricity cost and consumption to develop baseline. Take 3 people who have made 1 significant shift to efficiency and audit their electricity cost and usage to develop a trend. Take 3 more people who have made more than one significant changes to efficiency and audit their cost and consumption level

7 Teaching and Learning Strategies
They will set three evaluation audits to gather data on the cost and usage differences according to the shift to more efficient resources. Members of the group will gather the data dating from 2 years back until present; this data will contain the results on cost and consumption aspects. After the initial audit, they would then have to investigate whether the trends developed due to cost or the usage patterns. They would transfer this information into a graph which will illustrate the two aspects

8 ICT Tools Word processors Excel Facebook Whatsapp Powerpoint Cell Phones.

9 Innovative use of ICT Tools
Instead of the learners using calculators and exercise books in the classroom they were able to use their computers which enhanced the calculations and made the repetitive task of auditing easier and more interesting. The learners were also able to see graphical representation of the data collected (not using graph book and ruler). They also had a chance to use their cell phones inside the classroom
