What’s the point of marriage?
Malachi 2:14 … the Lord is the witness between you and the wife of your youth … she is your partner, the wife of your marriage covenant.
Proverbs 2:16-17 [Beware of the] adulterous woman… who has left the partner of her youth and ignored the covenant she made before God.

What’s the point of marriage?
#1 It’s a Covenant of Partnership
#2 It’s a safe place for children
#3 It allows men & women to thrive in their ministries
#4 It’s a picture of Christ and his Church
Divorce breaks all this
God hates divorce but he allows it as a concession.
Matthew 19:8 Moses permitted you to divorce your wives because your hearts were hard. But it was not this way from the beginning.
1Corinthians 7:15 God has called us to live in peace.

Divorce in the Bible is heavily regulated
Deuteronomy 24:1-4
Limits reason for divorce to sexual unfaithfulness.
Jesus agreed (Matthew 19:3-10, Matthew 5:32)
Remarriage
Encouraged for widows and widowers who can’t handle a single life. (1Corinthians 7:8-9)
It’s assumed a divorced person will remarry so long as the divorce was legitimate
(Exodus 21:10-11, Deuteronomy 24:1-4)

Paul just repeats what Jesus says about divorce:
General principle: don’t separate what God has joined.
Don’t treat separation as divorce.
v12-16 – if an unbeliever wants to leave the marriage, don’t stop them.
