TOTD: Pres. Andrew Johnson was the 1st impeached president in American history. He was charged with violating the Tenure of Office Act for removing Edwin Stanton, the Secretary of War. The Tenure of Office Act stated that a president could not dismiss appointed officials without the consent of Congress. In a 1926 case, the Supreme Court declared that the Tenure of Office Act had been invalid…so he was impeached for nothing. What do you think a president needs to do to be removed from office?
