3.CollectKnown Information by completing Pre-Lab Questions Unit: Earth, Sun, & Moon Anchors Table 2. Name Known Concept Angle of Light LAB Observations Announce New Concept The Reason for the Seasons. LAB Conclusions What do you know about Earth’s axis? What are the four seasons? (List them in order starting with the current one) What is the role of the Sun in the uneven heating of Earth’s Surface? 4. Highlight Characteristics Position 1 – MOST ENERGY Position 1 – MOST DIRECT 6. Reveal Characteristics Shared As the Earth revolves around the Sun, the light will become more direct and the Sun’s energy will get stronger increasing the temperature and causing warm summers. The Northern Hemisphere experiences the longest day of the year on June 22 and is known as the Summer Solstice. 5. Observe Characteristics of New Concept When the pole is tilted towards the Sun, the light will hit the Earth’s surface with more direct sunlight and will cause longer days. When the pole is tilted away from the Sun, the light will hit the Earth’s surface at an obtuse angle causing indirect sunlight and will cause longer days. Position 2 – Least amount of energy Position 2 – Indirect As the Earth revolves around the Sun, the light will become less direct and the Sun’s energy will shift towards the opposite pole, causing shorter days and cold winters. The Northern hemisphere experiences the shortest day of the year on December 22 and this is known as the Winter Solstice 7. Understanding of the New Concept: The reasons for the seasons is because the Earth is tilted on it’s axis. This causes the Earth’s surface to receive direct sunlight during the summer and indirect sunlight during the Winter. The revolution of the Earth around the Sun causes a cycle of the four seasons every year. The tilt of the Earth on it’s axis also causes the Northern and Sothern hemispheres to experience opposite seasons through out the year. ANCHORS 1. Announce 2. Name 3. Collect 4. Highlight 5.
