Teens and Suicide Suicide: the act of intentionally killing oneself.
Suicide is the 2nd leading cause of death in the U.S for teens Common Myths: “People who talk about suicide won’t really do it.” “Talking about suicide may give someone the idea.” “If a person is determined to kill him/herself, nothing is going to stop him/her.” “People who attempt suicide and do not complete suicide are just trying to get attention and are not really serious.”

Common Signs: Seek help if you see or experience any of these
Talking about death or mentioning methods of suicide Avoiding activities that involve family or friends Showing a low level of energy Taking greater risks than usual, such as illegal drugs Losing interests in hobbies, sports, or school Giving away prized personal possessions Having a history of suicide attempt.

Helping a troubled friend
If a friend mentions suicide or hurting themselves always take it seriously. Helpful Steps: Listen to the friend Remain calm Do not promise to keep it a secret Tell your friend his/her life is very important to you Urge friend to go and get help or find a trusted adult to discuss this with.

6 steps for decision making:
State the situation What is our situation right now? List the options List all possible option you have in this situation Weigh possible outcomes Weigh out each of the options you listed above and what their outcomes could be Consider values Consider your values as a person, what is valuable in this situation. Make a decision and act Out of the options that you listed what did you choose? Evaluate decision What is the effect that your decision will have? Will there be any consequences?
