5 Energy Associated with Bonding
Generally speaking, atoms bond together and form stable molecules (otherwise why would they stay bonded together? They’d just fall apart)

6 Breaking Bonds (NOT spontaneous): Energy is required (absorbed)
The atoms are going from a stable to a less stable state

7 SPONTANEOUS Bond Formation = Energy is released
The atoms are going from a less stable to a more stable state In a chemical reaction, both of the above are occurring: bonds are being broken, new bonds are being formed

8 Getting Energy from ATP
If the energy released from the bonds being formed is greater the energy required to break the bonds, then the overall reaction releases energy. This is the case with the hydrolysis of ATP. The net output of energy allows our cells to use this energy for various cell processes.
