1 Multiplying Whole Numbers
By lining them up…

2 Find the result of multiplying 48 and 253
Find the result of multiplying 48 and 253. First, line them up aligned right: 253 x 48

3 Find the result of multiplying 48 and 253.
8×3=24 so the 4 is written under the first column and a 2 is placed above the next column. 253 x 48 4

4 Find the result of multiplying 48 and 253.
4 2 8×5=40 plus the 2 sitting above gives 42 so the 2 is written under the second column and a 4 is placed above the next column. 253 x 48 24

5 Find the result of multiplying 48 and 253.
4 2 8×5=16 plus the 4 sitting above gives 20 so the 20 is written under the last column 253 x 48 2024

6 Find the result of multiplying 48 and 253.
x 48 2024 Now multiply through by 4 (but remember it is actually 40 so a zero needs to be placed in the first column.)

7 Find the result of multiplying 48 and 253.
1 253 x 48 2024 20 4×3=12 so a 2 goes under the second column and a 1 sits above the second column.

8 Find the result of multiplying 48 and 253.
2 1 253 x 48 2024 120 4×5=20 plus the 1 above the column gives 21. So a 1 goes under the next column and a 2 sits above the third column.

9 Find the result of multiplying 48 and 253.
2 1 253 x 48 2024 10120 4×2=8 plus the 2 above the column gives 10. So a 10 goes under the next column

10 Find the result of multiplying 48 and 253.
x 48 2024 10120 12144 Now add these two rows to get the solution.
