Collisions Chapter 7.5
2
Collisions Follow Law of Conservation of Momentum 2 types:
Net momentum before collision = Net momentum after the collision 2 types: Elastic inelastic
3
Elastic Collisions When objects collide without being permanently deformed and without generating heat Colliding objects bounce perfectly
4
Inelastic Collisions Conservation of momentum still holds true
Colliding objects become distorted, coupled or tangled together and generate heat during the collision
5
Example 1: Suppose you have two 2 kg toy trucks, one that is at rest and one that is moving at a speed of 4 m/s. When the two trucks collide in an inelastic collision, what will be the velocity of the trucks after the collision when they are stuck together? Net momentum before = net momentum after (2 kg)(4 m/s) + (2 kg)(0 m/s) = (2 kg + 2 kg)(v) V= 2 m/s

Example 2: Suppose you have the same two 2 kg toy trucks, one that is at moving at a speed of 2 m/s and the other at a speed of 4 m/s. When the two trucks collide in an inelastic collision, what will be the velocity of the trucks after the collision when they are stuck together? Net momentum before = net momentum after (2 kg)(2 m/s) + (2 kg)(4 m/s) = (2 kg + 2 kg)(v) V= 3 m/s
