1 Biology Do Now Directions: Take out a sheet of notebook (Do Now sheet) and, then answer the question based on last night’s homework. What is the difference between polar and nonpolar molecules?

2 Biology Do Now What is the difference between polar and nonpolar molecules? Polar molecules have an uneven distribution of the electrons resulting a part of the molecule having a positive charge and another part having a negative charge. Nonpolar molecules have an even distribution of the electrons resulting in no charges on the molecule.

3 Last night’s Homework – Turn in
Students will research to define and describe an example for each term: atom, molecule, covalent bond, ionic bond, polar molecule, nonpolar molecule, electronegativity, and hydrogen bond.

4 Engage – Answer on a sheet of notebook paper
Ask students, “What are living things made of? And “Why do you think we have to study chemistry in Biology?”

5 Explore - “Humans Really Are Made of Stardust…”
Students will read the article and answer the guide questions. 1) What fraction of the elements found in stars do humans share? 2) What elements are living things made of? 3) What does CHNOPS stand for? 4) What does APOGEE stand for? 5) Why do we have to study chemistry in biology?

6 Objective(s) Students will know the connection between studying chemistry in a biology course by reading an article on “Humans are really made of stardust.” Mastery: 75% on TDQs Students will know the chemical basis of life by learning how the periodic table of elements is organized and what information the periodic table can provide us.
