Classifying Organisms
The classification of organisms is called “taxonomy”. There are so many creatures out there! Creatures are classified according to common characteristics. Ex.) Mammals have hair When scientists discover a new organism they name it using binomial-nomenclature. Ex.) Dog = “Canis Lupus”

Levels of Classification
Kingdom is the largest division, based upon differences in cell structure. Species refers to a unique group of organisms which are capable of successfully interbreeding with one another.

Species A group of organisms capable of reproducing among themselves.
Dogs -Canis Lupus = Wolf Ex): Dogs, Wolves

Ex): Dogs, Wolves, Coyotes, Jackals, Dingos
Genus Dogs - Canis = Sharp tooth Ex): Dogs, Wolves, Coyotes, Jackals, Dingos

Canidae = Wolf-like, Fox- like Ex): Wolves, Foxes
Family Dogs Canidae = Wolf-like, Fox- like Ex): Wolves, Foxes

- Carnivore = meat-eating Ex): wolf, bear, lion, seal
Order Dogs - Carnivore = meat-eating Ex): wolf, bear, lion, seal

Characteristics: Hair, Live Birth, Milk, Warm blooded Ex): Humans, Monkeys, Rabbits, Cats, Whales, etc…

Phylum Dogs Chordata = Neural Chord Vertebrata = Spinal Chord Ex): Mammals, Birds, Reptiles, Amphibians, Fish

Characteristics: living things that move on their own and consume other organisms.
