What is work? Work is equal to the force applied times the distance the over which the force is applied.

How is the amount of work measured?
When you push a box with a force of 1N a distance of one meter, you have accomplished 1joule of work. What is a joule? 1 joule = 1 N·m

How are force and distance related in machines?
In a simple machine the work input is always equal to or greater than the work output. In order to produce a large output force with a small input force the input force is applied over a longer distance

What is efficiency? Efficiency is the ratio of work output to work input. Efficiency = Wo/Wi In real machines work output is always less than work input due to friction.

The rate work is done is called power.
Power is work (joules) ÷ time (seconds) P=W/t The Unit for power is watt. 1watt = 1 joule/second
