Early May 1919, Winnipeg’s metal and building trade workers walked off their jobs. Demands – ___________________________________ ____________________________________________ Winnipeg’s Trades and Labour Council joined their cause…. May 15, people left their jobs!! WHAT DOES THAT MEAN FOR WINNIPEG???

No fire fighters, postal workers, telephone operators, newspapers, streetcars, or even the deliveries of bread, milk or ice!!!.....PROBLEMS???? _______________________ Police even wanted to join, but were convinced by strike leaders to stay…….WHY??? ______________________ Leaders declared their should be NO VIOLENCE….WHY?? _____________________________________________ How did the city handle this problem???....Has anyone seen the SIMPSONS episode where they all strike????

Winnipeg General Strike (1919)
Business leaders created the “______________________,” and they volunteered to run the city themselves City’s Mayor appealed to Ottawa for help. Forced postal workers back & sent Mounties. The governmentt was worried the strike would spread __________: club-wielding ‘specials’ charged a crowd who threw rocks, bricks & bottles June 17 – Strike leaders arrested June 21 – To protest the arrest, organized a march. Turned into ‘____________.’ Major riot, 2 dead, 30 injured, TONNES arrested!! Armed vehicles in streets next day.

The Automobile Road paving began in cities and gradual spread. In Canada had kms of paved road….by 1930 there was Tourism became massively important. People began to acquire summer cottages now that roads could get them there. In 1929, 4 million Americans spent $300 million viewing the unspoiled beauty of Canada.
