1 Journal Entry 2 Representing Forces

2 F We depict all forces with a capital F.
______ ______ ______ We depict all forces with a capital F. Subscripts are used to give details about the force. First SS: Name of Force Second SS: Dimension of Force, if applicable. Third SS: Number or ID of Force, if applicable.

3 F T This is the Force of Tension. F T y This is the Force of Tension in the vertical (y) Dimension. F T y 2 This is the 2nd Force of Tension in the Y-Dimension.

For simplicity, objects will be depicted as a single dot. We assume that all forces act at that dot. Force arrows (called vectors), are drawn pointing AWAY from the object. Here, a wooden box hangs from a rope. Two forces are acting on the hanging box. One points UP, the other points DOWN. The length of the arrow is used to show the “strength” of the force. Longer arrows represent stronger forces.

5 Now the box is supported by two ropes.
Here, a wooden box hangs from a rope. The force for this scenario would be labeled as: Now the box is supported by two ropes. FT FT1 FT2 Fg Fg Hash marks can be used to show that two force vectors are equal length.
