What is a Research Report? j Let’s recap…
A research report provides the facts that you learned by investigating sources. Like any other kind of essay, a good research report needs to be planned and written with a specific purpose in mind. For your LAC Research Report, YOUR purpose is to find facts about the career you chose to research (and submitted for your “Topic Selection” assignment). Additionally, after you have gathered and organized information about your career choice and completed the 4 prewriting assignments (will be reviewed on another slide), you will present your findings in a 5-paragraph research report. The appropriate style for most research reports is formal. The appropriate tone is serious. When you write your research report, you can achieve a serious tone by simply using an objective, impersonal voice (neutral, impartial, unbiased). Your personality does not need to shine through in your writing as it would in a creative fiction story or personal narrative for example. A research report must also include citations of sources. You must document where you found the facts that are included in your report. (Citing sources and creating a Works Cited page will be reviewed

In-Text Citations and Works Cited
22
What does an in-text citation look like?
How the islands came to exist 600 miles from the coast of Ecuador, South America is purely scientific (Blashfield 6, Henzel 4). Although they’ve only been know about for the last 477 years, these islands have been forming for millions of years, and some continue to grow. These islands, 13 major and 6 minor, form an archipelago. This build up creates a volcano that eventually is large enough to break the water’s surface. They started as volcano that sits upon the Nazca Tectonic Plate. Deep within the earth’s surface is a “hot spot”. At this place deep under the ocean magma – or melted rock – rises out of the ground (Henzel 6). Use in-text citations for any quotes or facts that are not common knowledge.
23
Let’s look at some other examples…
Leroy predicted in 1998 that eBay would become the most lucrative Internet business, surpassing most businesses even during tough economic times (45). OR Founded in 1995 by Pierre Omidyar, Jeff Skoll and Meg Whitman, eBay has become the most lucrative Internet business (Leroy 45).
24
To cite or not to cite… Author’s idea Author’s thought
DO NOT CITE CITE Author’s idea Author’s thought Author’s opinion Author’s research Quotations Summary of someone’s work / research Other people’s pictures, illustrations, etc. Common knowledge Your idea Your thoughts Your opinion Your artwork/pictures
25
Works Cited Page A Works Cited page lists the sources that you cite within your research paper. The Works Cited belongs at the end of your research paper. It does not include sources you found but did not use in your research paper. See Rubric for other specific details for formatting your Works Cited page We will cover additional details during class tomorrow for citing sources within your report (Wednesday, April 29th).

Career Note-Taking Form
31
Graphic Organizer for 5-Paragraph Essay The graphic organizer is a tool to help you organize your writing for the rough draft. DO NOT turn in the graphic organizer for this week’s assignment. Turn in the rough draft you put together for your report. If you do decide to use the graphic organizer, you should be able to take the information you filled in (basically in the same order), and put it right into 5-paragraph form in a Word or Open Office document.
